About CHSF
Our Relationship with the Leeds Congenital Heart Unit
Supporting life-saving care, every step of the way
Children’s Heart Surgery Fund (CHSF) exists to support the Leeds Congenital Heart Unit (LCHU), its patients and the dedicated teams who care for them.
Leeds Congenital Heart Unit (LCHU)
Each year, around 17,000 babies, children and adults with congenital heart disease (CHD) are treated as outpatients at the LCHU. Alongside this, over 350 patients from our region undergo open heart surgery every year – life-saving procedures made possible by the expertise and commitment of the unit’s clinical teams. The LCHU is a world-class centre of excellence, providing specialist care from before birth right through to adulthood. Their work spans fetal diagnosis, childhood and teenage care, and adult congenital services, supporting people with lifelong heart conditions across Yorkshire, Th Humber, N.e Lincolnshire and N. Derbyshire. They are also leaders in screening, diagnosis and treatment, identifying heart problems early and delivering the advanced care patients need.
This is where CHSF comes in.
How CHSF Supports LCHU
We exist to enhance everything the LCHU does, helping to ensure patients receive not only outstanding medical care, but also the emotional, practical and environmental support they need during their journey.
Congenital heart disease affects around 1 in 125 babies, making it the most common birth defect worldwide. The Leeds Congenital Heart Unit provides the clinical expertise in our region. Children’s Heart Surgery Fund provide the added support that makes that care go further – helping to ease anxiety, improve experiences and give patients and their families the best possible quality care.
Our support includes:
Improving facilities to create a more comforting and family-friendly environment
Providing resources for parents and carers, helping them navigate what can be an overwhelming time
Supporting staff wellbeing and development, ensuring the incredible teams at Leeds can continue delivering exceptional care
