Congenital Heart Disease

Congenital heart disease or CHD is a heart condition you are born with

Affecting 1 in 125 births, congenital heart disease is the umbrella term to describe any heart condition or defect that develops in the womb, before the baby is born. Thankfully, for the majority of babies diagnosed with congenital heart disease (CHD), their condition is minor and doesn’t need treatment, or can be corrected with surgery. Other conditions are more serious and sadly, a small number do not survive. However, thanks to advances in early diagnosis and treatment, most children will grow up to live full and active lives.

Truncus Arteriosus
A rare condition where there is one main blood vessel leaving the heart instead of the usual two.
Tricuspid Atresia
A condition where the tricuspid valve has not formed, preventing normal blood flow from the upper to the lower right chamber of the heart.
Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA)
A condition where the two main arteries leaving the heart are switched, affecting how blood flows between the heart, lungs and body.
Total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage (TAPVD)
A rare condition where the veins carrying blood from the lungs connect to the heart abnormally, also known as TAPVC or TAPVR
Tetralogy of Fallot (ToF)
A combination of four heart problems that affect the flow of blood through the heart and to the lungs.
Small Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), muscular
A small hole in the muscular wall between the heart’s two lower chambers, which may close on its own.
Right Aortic Arch
A variation where the aorta curves towards the right side of the body instead of the left.
Pulmonary Stenosis
A narrowing of the pulmonary valve or the area around it, making it harder for blood to flow from the heart to the lungs.
Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA)
A blood vessel that normally closes shortly after birth remains open, allowing blood to flow between the aorta and pulmonary artery.
Large Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD)
A large hole between the heart’s two lower chambers that can cause extra blood to flow to the lungs.
Interrupted Aortic Arch
A rare condition where there is a complete break in the aorta, preventing normal blood flow from the heart to the body.
Inherited cardiovascular conditions
Heart and blood vessel conditions caused by genetic changes that can be passed down through families, including conditions such as cardiomyopathy.
Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome (HRHS)
A condition where the right side of the heart is underdeveloped, affecting its ability to pump blood to the lungs.
Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS)
A serious condition where the left side of the heart is underdeveloped and cannot pump blood effectively to the body.
Heterotaxy Syndrome
A rare condition where the organs in the chest and abdomen develop in an unusual arrangement, often affecting the heart.
Fontan circulation
A type of circulation created through surgery for people born with a heart that has only one functioning pumping chamber.
Ebstein’s Anomaly
A rare condition where the tricuspid valve is positioned abnormally and does not work as it should.
Coarctation of the Aorta (CoA)
A narrowing in the aorta that can restrict the flow of blood from the heart to the body.
Bicuspid Aortic Valve
A condition where the aortic valve has two leaflets instead of the usual three, which can affect how the valve works.
Atrioventricular Septal Defect (AVSD), partial
A hole between the heart’s upper chambers, along with an abnormal valve between the upper and lower chambers.
Atrioventricular Septal Defect (AVSD), complete
A large hole in the centre of the heart, affecting the walls between the chambers and the valves between them.
Atrial Septal Defect (ASD)
A hole between the heart’s two upper chambers that allows blood to pass between them.
Aortic Stenosis
A narrowing of the aortic valve that makes it harder for the heart to pump blood around the body.
