iPads for PICU
Lots of children are awake on PICU post cardiac surgery and the iPads will now provide some entertainment for children while they recover. The iPads will also be used as a distraction during medical procedures.
Support for Families
What to expect on the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
When your child comes out of surgery, they will be cared for on the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). We know this can feel like one of the more overwhelming parts of the journey, but your child will be in a highly specialised environment, looked after by an experienced and dedicated team.

Every child’s journey is unique – some children may only need to stay for a short time, while others may need a longer period of care and support. The time they will spend in PICU is dependent on their heart condition, the operation they have had and the age of your child. However long your child’s stay is, the hospital team is there every step of the way, making sure your child gets exactly the care they need. And CHSF is there for you.
You’ll see lots of equipment around your child, which can feel daunting at first. These machines are there to carefully monitor things like heart rate, breathing and oxygen levels, and to provide support while your child recovers.
Recovery on PICU can be different for every family. There may be moments of progress, times of waiting, and lots of emotions along the way. Whatever your experience, you are not alone. The CHSF Family Support team are here to support you – whether that’s with practical help, a listening ear or small comforts during your time in hospital.
When your child is ready, they will move from PICU to Ward L51 (the children’s heart ward) to continue their recovery.
Above all, PICU is a place where your child will be closely cared for and where you will be supported too. Please don’t hesitate to ask for help or speak to a member of the team if you need anything at all.
